Chapter Twelve

Steffen

This was the second time they’d trained together since he’d gone over to Ryan’s place.

Ryan had looked nervous when he’d showed up today, and Steffen had a feeling he knew what was coming. While he did like Ryan, he’d realized the other night, when he’d been too ashamed to take off his underwear, that it had been too soon for him.

“What do you say we go back to my place after?” Ryan asked. His pose screamed of nerves: hand behind his neck, cheeks red, gaze on the floor.

Steffen finished setting up the barbell before he answered, remembering Ryan’s request that next time he get totally naked. What if Ryan rejected him? He was enjoying training with him. Would they still be able to do that if Ryan freaked out over his anatomy? “I had a lot of fun last time, but maybe after the competition.”

Ryan gave him a tight nod. “Let’s get training then.”

Steffen hefted the barbell, flipping it up into a perfect power clean. They’d been working on his form, and Steffen felt he’d finally mastered it.

“Now lower it slowly,” Ryan said, his arms crossed as he watched Steffen from behind.

Arms burning, Steffen rolled the bar back to rest on the hooks of his fingers and bent over.

“Don’t curve your back.” Ryan put his hand on Steffen’s stomach and shoulders to correct his form. Steffen gasped at the simple touch, completely losing track of what he was doing. The barbell slipped from his grip and fell the last few inches to the floor with a loud thud, the padded floor muffling the worst of the sound. Luckily the barbell was only lightly weighted for him to practice his form.

“Want to try one more before we add more weight?”

“Yeah.” Steffen thrust out his hips in a squat, trying to concentrate on keeping his back straight this time.

“Now push from your heels,” Ryan instructed as Steffen adjusted his grip. “Go!”

Steffen stood, pulling the bar up with him and letting the force of the pull raise the bar the last few inches while he turned his wrists. “How was that?” Steffen asked, resting the bar on his chest. It was far above his scar, but it still felt odd. Phantom boobs. He snickered. Most of the time he barely remembered he’d ever even had them.

“Much better.” Ryan nodded as Steffen put the bar back down. “Think you can do twenty more?”

“Better make it ten to be safe,” Steffen said, rubbing his sternum. “My chest has been sore.”

Ryan nodded and grabbed two five-pound plates.

“I’ve been meaning to ask. How’d your boss take you turning down the overtime lately?” Steffen asked. Not only had Ryan not been late, he’d been arriving before Steffen most nights.

Ryan put the plates on and did a few power cleans. Perfect form. Steffen wanted to clap but didn’t want to distract him, even on these warm ups. He’d seen Ryan clean and jerk a lot more than was on the bar right now, but any move that involved moving at high speed with a barbell was dangerous.
